Guest trabonita
Hi, Where does everyone walk their dogs off lead? Are there many parks/woods etc in the surrounding areas (within an hour from Perth), I'm getting the impression that Australia isn't as dog friendly as the UK :-( Thanks

We have tried taking the dog for a day out in the national parks only to be stopped at the gate and denied entry due to the dog, i dont see the harm in walking the dog in a national park, but the WA Govt dont seem to agree, in the UK National Park areas are made for dog walkers

Guest JonnyNI
Hi Everybody, We were planning to bring our wee Lhasa Apso (Coco) out with us but sadly she was killed in an awful attack by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier about a month ago. I was thinking about surprising my fiancee (soon to be wife) with a Lhasa Apso pup once we get out there. However, I have noticed that Oz doesn't seem to be that dog friendly at all. Being a dog lover I cannot understand this mentality but I guess this is one of the things you have to accept when moving to a new country. Would those who have already made the move advise against getting a dog? The only reason I ask is that it seems to be quite restrictive, not only for the national parks mentioned in this post but for rentals as well. Just thought I would see what others thoughts are on this... Jonny
fifi69
Jonnny, as a huge dog/animal lover my heart goes out to you and your fiancee, what a awful thing to have happened to your wee dog. I could rant for ages about why this shouldnt have happened but i shall stick to your question.I dont believe the people in Oz are on the whole not dog friendly, but yes there does seem to be limitations on where you can take dogs. As well as the beach there are loads of parks to walk dogs off the leash, i would imagine that a good half hour run round one of these a few times a day would be enough for a small dog, not the most exciting of walks though. Ive seen public footpaths heading into the bush (sorry cant remember where), looked like horses used them too. I picked up a holidaying with dogs book from tourist information at the weekend, seems to be plenty places to go, if your willing to drive a bit out. The snake business does worry me a bit though!!Rentals can be a prob, but even if it says no pets ive known people who have offered a dog bond and its been fine. If you get your rental sorted out first you can then ask if a dog would be ok before actually getting it.On a side note my fav dog beaches so far are South Beach at Freemantle, they can go on the adjoining grassy/park/bbq area too, the cafes in the area dont have a prob with your dog sitting with you either. Warnbro beach is another that i like. So far i havent met any aggressive or unsocial dogs in Perth.
JustMe
Hey, Whiteman park has a really good enclosed doggy area to walk around Its near the mussell pool, we also go to yollongong park, hillarys dog beach - depends were you are but we are very disheartened that we cant walk our dog in the beautiful national parks. I dont know why they just cant say that they can aslong as they are on a lead if its due to wildlife etc..
