Wi&Va
On the "taxfilenumberaustralia" website TFN really costs 59$ (as it is a tax agent). And on the official ATO website (ato.gov....) it is for free, you can apply in ATO, by phone or online when you are already in Oz.
Philpom
You definitely don't pay anything for a TFN and you can only apply for one once you are in Australia. http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.aspx?doc=/content/38760.htm
phil
It only takes a few minutes to apply and the site states you need to be in Australia and have an address they can post it to. It's online and you can access the site from anywhere. Whether they check you've arrived in the country or not, and what they'd do if they reckoned you were applying while still offshore, I don't know. So you could possibly apply from offshore I guess. We waited till we were here, then wandered into the office in the CBD (were there to sort out bank accounts etc anyway). Took about 10 minutes. And is free. Anyone trying to charge you is just trying to get your cash - they may well fill the form in for you, but with information you'd have to give them anyway. Personally, a waster of dollars I reckon. Philpom
It's linked to DIAC so they do a check to see whether you've arrived before they will issue it.
Guest Gerald.G
Wonder do I still use back the same tax file number that they gave me during my Uni days? It's been 10 years ago & i am moving back soon.
Druid
Your tax file number is for life, it will still be valid, I left for 6 years and came back to my same number, just let them know your new address when you land
