LauraB
Any recommendations on places that sell gluten free food? Likewise any recommendations for gluten free restaurants? I'm diagnosed coeliac so any info much appreciated. I know Coles do a gluten free range. Thanks
Tia2
Hi LauraB. My daughter is also coeliac, she is 10years old. We are moving in Feb 2013 so I am also interested in this thread. I visited for 5 weeks in 2005 but took most of her food with us and did not really eat out much as it just becomes too complicated. However, since we will soon be living there I am very interested in this thread. Are you already living in Oz? Are you aware if food can be purchased on prescription? LauraB
Hi Tia. Good to know I am not alone! It's not fun is it and eating out has definitely become a nightmare so trying to eat out somewhere unfamiliar is even more daunting! I'm moving out in 6 weeks so I'll certainly let you know how I find it. I know Coles which is one of the main supermarkets in Oz has a gluten free range and work with Coeliac Research Fund, but as far as I know there is nothing on prescription like we have here. I think I'll join coeliac Oz when I get there and they have a list of GF restaurants and I did see on another post earlier today that there's a pizza place (www.bbar.com.au/) that do GF. Give me a break!
There are sections in supermarkets for Gluten free foods. Not sure about restaurants though. One thing you might be interested to find out, is well you know everyone moans about the sausages being not very nice, well Ive noticed that most are gluten free, which is probably why. My Stepfather has Coeliacs disease, and from what I can remember, I think there is just as much choice in our local Coles as there was in our old local Sainsburys. Tia2
I plan to take our bread maker and big electric mixer to make her bread and cakes etc. However, she is very fussy which makes it even more harder!! It's definatley the eating out that is a nightmare. Not sure if the sausages are not nice due to being GF as at least they won't be backed full of rusk and other useless ingredients! Yuck lol. I reckon german sausages are the best and they tend to be GF more often than not
Tia2
sorry, i forgot to ask LauraB, where abouts are you moving too?
LauraB
I'm vegetarian as well, just to make it more difficult!!haha Not sure exactly where yet. I have a temporary place for a month in Cottesloe and then just going to look around in that time and see where I like the look of :-)
Guest jojo_muir
Plenty of options around. You'll probably love The Naked Fig chain of restaurants/cafes because they do really nice gluten-free options. But I'm finding that there are lots of restaurants now that have gluten free options - like Clancy's Fish Bar (they had a really nice quinoa salad on their menu last week) and the Boulevard Hotel in Floreat which had a choice of 2-3 gluten free meals. My favourite place for buying goods is the Angry Almond (either at the Subiaco markets or in Dalkeith). THey sell wholesale stuff, so you can go in and choose from a variety of different grains, seeds, nuts, dried fruits, etc. They're also online and do deliveries. But Coles/Woolies are getting better. THe Coles in Floreat has a gluten free aisle (!!!!) and the range is pretty good. There are healthfood shops scattered around the place too if you need something more specific like rice syrup or coconut oil that is too specialised for Coles. And if you're in Cottesloe, there's Nature's Harvest on Napolean street which is expensive but has a good range for emergencies...
Tia2
thank you for your advice jojo_muir. Do you have coeliacs disease too?
Guest jojo_muir
Yes, unfortunately The FODMAP diet out of Melbourne University is showing real promise for reducing my symptoms tho...
Tia2
sorry to sound daft but what is the FODMAP diet? what symptoms do you still have if you follow a gluten a free diet? My daughter was diagnosed 10 years ago and no longer has any symptoms as she does not consume any gluten containing foods.
Guest jojo_muir
Gluten free fixes many of my symptoms but not all (IBS - groan). A low FODMAP diet, for me, fixes almost everything - although it's fairly difficult to stick to. A FODMAP diet is low in Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. It works for me...
LauraB
Hi Tia. Just to update - glutenfree here is AMAZING! So much better than UK. Coles in Cottesloe have so much stuff and way more variety than UK - a whole range of different breads, cakes, pasta, etc. Woolworths in CBD also had quite a bit, especially different breads. I was very impressed. Also in Fremantle, I had a gluten free burger bun at a little cafe called Green Bean (I think that was it's name!) and I walked passed a bakers in Freo and noticed they sold fresh GF loaves. Can't believe it!!
Tia2
wow, LauraB, thank you so much for the update. This is reassuring for us I found some restaurants in WA that cater for GF, there is also a fish and chip shop in fremantle that caters for Coeliacs, you'll have to see if you can find it and let me know. I can't remember of the top of my head what it's called but if you need me to find out, let me know
LauraB
I can't remember the name but I know the one you mean! I also pasted a pizza take out place today in Scarborough that had a big "gluten free available" sign outside. It's called Mojos. Will definitely try that at some point!! fifi69
If in the CBD, in or around Hay Street, and fancy a lite bite/snack, Bella Gina Cafe do a good range of gluten free sandwiches/muffins etc, all freshly made/baked by the owners
