We bought our first house last month, at no point did we think we couldn't afford it - we wouldn't have gone ahead otherwise! Life out here (or anywhere for that matter) is for living, not struggling.
Guest Robandvicky
Hi Emloudubbs my thoughts exactly Iv e been over a number of times and ye the main things are expensive Houses/cars and things alike but we have bills here in the uk to pay when I,m over there I don t price things on the exchange rate If i did that I wouldn t do anything as it is expensive but when you work out your wages here then work out what you can earn over there most things arnt that much difference for instance a pint of lager UK £3.50 I get £10 per hour in UK in Perth Joiner can ern $30 per hour and a pint of larger $8 to $11 so not alot of difference I must admit it is dear to eat out though theres no 2 for $10 over there but like anything elsewe can shop around We have been here for 10 months now. My OH is a roofer and alot of our friends are brickies, carpenters etc. None of them are doing those jobs. Don't believe the wages the visa people or internet say. Alot of tradies want you to have WA experience. Some people come here and they start from the bottom again in their trade. I love it here and would not go back but it is incredibly hard when you first arrive, some people hear you accent and say no straightaway. Also most tradies are self employed so you will not be able to buy for at least 2 years. Also you cannot start work until you have your tax file number and ABN if self employed - Would need to allow a few weeks for that. Getting a rental is so hard you can be competing against 60 families. To buy a house here it is cheaper if you come from London but if you come from outside London you will find it expensive. We are low earners here and cope fine but we do not have children. Jobs are getting harder to get like the UK now as 1600 people migrate here every week. Do not believe everything your visa agent says. We was told my OH would get loads of roofing work, but when you arrive the roofs are different he has no WA exp and they do not like employing English. But if you know people here then your lucky if they can help you. Expect the worse and then the stress won't kill you too much, well thats what we did!
