Defence Careers

Hi. I've just received a positive skills assessment for 233311 Electrical Engineer. EOI and State Sponsorship application forms in last week.

My background is within the Defence industry. I would love to work at the Naval Base at Garden Island, however, you need to be an Australian Citizen. :(

The oil and gas jobs requires oil and gas experience. The railway jobs requires railways experience, etc, etc. I don't know what else I can do!! I've been in Defence since I left school.

Has anyone else had any similar experience or managed to get into Defence without citizenship?

Hi,

What were you working on, planes, vehicles, missiles, boats etc? Don't just view things as 'defence' but look at things in a broader perspective - transferable skills and products. If you used your skills on military vehicles, you may be able to find work in the car industry.

Hi Chocky,

I've tried looking at transferable skills and have seen a lot of suitable jobs but they all say "minimum of 5 years oil and gas experience" or "5 years railways experience essential" at the end.

I guess I'll just have to apply for them anyway when I arrive. It's frustrating but I'm not being put off!

Rob.

Don't entirely rule out defence jobs - I work for a defence company in the uk and am wracking my brains, I do think we have a few non uk nationals but it does impact what they can work on. Everyone here is security cleared. Unfortunately I have a feeling that most of these co's are not located in Perth (or at least the few I looked at).

Good luck.

Make sure it is very clear in your cv the relevant skills you have and your achievements. Bullet points not long swathes of texts. I work in HR in the UK and we see loads and loads of CV's. Critical for the key points to stand out with a quick glance over and short concise bullet points are best for this.
