Hi my wife is heading to Perth early November to meet her new work mates and get set up with the team she will be there 3 weeks before returning to UK and we head down together 28th Dec. While there she will be opening a bank account. Can she open a joint account even though I wont be with her at the time and what is the best method of taking money to open an account we would deposit $10-$15k for now but she does not want to carry a large amount of cash. Just want to make it easiest for her as I already feel guilty her having to go on her own and dont want her stressing........Any help is much appreciated.

you can only take $10k in as cash, but can setup an account online (westpac i used) when she gets there she need go into a branch with her passport and another form of id, they will then activate it, you can transfer money to it online.

I think they will need to see your ID and u in person before can open joint account.

Yeah, you need to be there to open a joint account.

Once she's opened an account you can transfer the money across using a forex company - much cheaper than using the banks and a whole lot safer than carting cash around! We used UKForex and found them very speedy, very competent and very helpful on the phone.

agree UKForex are very good and better exchange rate than bank, plus if you are new customer first 2 transfers are fee free (well were when i joined lol)

We use Ozforex for money transfers, they are also UKforex - They offer our clients the free transfers and you can transfer less than the $2,000 minimum if you need to - please feel free to use our partner link to make sure you get this deal http://www.ozforex.com.au/partner.asp?id=1490

We have had some great feedback from people who have used them.

To open a bank account in both names I think you will need to be here to do the 100 point ID to activate the account in person, even if you do it online with someone like Westpac, so maybe open it just in your wife's name till you get here (that's if you trust her not to spend it all on shoes )

We set up an account with ANZ, but couldn't actually use it until we did the 100 point ID when we got here.
