jodipodi
Lulu my husband gets lots of alerts for jobs via Seek, hes also on Linkedin and makes contact with relevantpeople to ask Qs etc- this will help if you havnt already. There seems a fair amount of vacancies but I expect actually being in Aus betters your chances. Does anyone know if the references would need to be recent, say we started collecting paperwork now but werent going for skills assessment until some point in the near future say next year, would they want the references to have been dated in the last however many weeks/months? Lulu78
Hi Jodipodi, Thanks for the reply. From what I see on Ssek, ethical jobs etc, there is work but worried as want to hit the ground running. I had the same issue with refs, as got them for skills assessment in summer 2012, for visa app in summer 2013 and will need them when I get to Oz. I asked referees to email them so in future I can just change date and if needs be copy a signature as all refs were ok with this! They prefer this to writing another ref. I'll tell hubs to get in touch with the refs to see if they'll be happy with that. Cheers Lulu As for jobs...I don't like saying 'if' so WHEN you get your visa you can start applying from wherever you are immediately because you will have the 'legal right to live and work in Australia' (that's whats usually in the small print at the bottom of job vacancies) sorry you may already know all of this Lulu but just trying to give as much help as I can as you have for me ......Youth Workers don't require a specific qualification in Australia so if you have a degree you will likely be looked upon favourably, I'd also say look for job titles 'Case Worker' if you fancy that sort of thing...I would have never had known to look under that heading- think it was CJBChris who sufggested to us- a bit of key work with young people etc maybe? There seems to be a lot of residential positions aswell x
jodipodi
Ah Lulu!!! You might be able to tell me how long the AWCA assessment is valid for? Does it say on the form?
Lulu78
Hi Jodi, Thanks for the info, I will defo start looking at other job titles. I think that for the visa application, your assessment has to be within the past 12 months. I will check through my stuff tomorrow but the 12 month figure is in my head. Lulu78
Hi All, we had our visa granted last week and am delighted but need to shift into the next gear. So, now wondering what the job scene is like? Are things really tough? Has anyone found a job recently ? Thinking of coming out in May 2014, we need to validate by June and want to save as much as we can. Any advice will be gratefully received. I'll let you know how I get on. Chris
Lulu78
Wow Chris, you are there already. We had our visa granted 2 weeks ago and its only really sinking in. So, I look forward to hearing how you get on. Best of luck Louise
Walkabout
Congratulations on your visa Louise! Enjoy the ride of getting your plans sorted! Chris! Great to hear from you, I am keeping everything crossed that the job offers are flooding in for you. We are not too far behind and will be out in November, we are just in that really frustrating time at the moment of being over the initial excitement but still having a bit too far to go (and way too much to get done!) to be properly excited about actually going! I look forward to everyones updates and hearing lots of good news about jobs etc for everyone!
cjbchris
From my experience so far.. things do move slowly, although we're only two weeks in and a lot is about who you know, so build up your connections fast... I had a great meeting yesterday with Hays recruitment in Perth, who would be a good point of contact on the career front when you first get here... good advice about careers, with the possibility of part time/ short term and permanent work through them... They also offered to reformat my CV into a more Oz friendly format.... Fingers crossed they'll find something for me soon, if my own applications don't come off.. I'll report back again soon... looking forward to seeing you all over here soon.... you'll love it, although it has p****ed it down since we got here ... hopefully the weather will be scorching when you arrive. Lulu78
Hi All, just wondering if I can apply for a Police check and Working With Children check before I arrive in May? cheers Lulu
cjbchris
You can't get a WWC check until you are here.. you have to either be in a job, or about to start a job in order to be able to apply... I was told by a Dept that as I had received police clearance that satisfied DIAC, then they would not need to follow up.. My wife has just applied for a WWC having now been offered a job by Dept Child Protection ... she couldn't apply for the check until the offer was on paper. So they allow you to start without it! I am trying to get as much done from this end as possible. Ah well.
Guest sarah301
So sad, community worker has now been taken off the list We have just received a positive outcome for the skills assessment too. does anyone know how likely it is to come back on the list? I noticed walfare worker is still on the list, is there anyway we can apply for this but with the community worker skills assessment - so frustrating as they are so similar in description. Walkabout
At a guess (and I am no expert) I would say that you would probably need to get another skills assessment for welfare worker (I also 'think' and I stress think, that they are assessed by different agencies). But if you think you can match the description with your skills then there is nothing stopping you, probably a safer bet than waiting for community worker to come back on as it seems really unpredictable as to when skills will appear or disappear. So frustrating though when you have gone through a skills assessment as they take ages! Fingers crossed you will find a way round.
Guest sarah301
Thanks Weston You are correct, it is another agency. We are going to see immigration today for advice. It's extra frustrating as our working holiday visa is up in Jan, so we won't have time to do another skilled assessment over here, so may have to face going back to the UK and continuing with process over there. Ah well at least we will see family (trying to stay positive!)
Lulu78
I did the skills assessment with ACWA, under Welfare Worker and it takes about 8 weeks but I think it can be done quicker. A friend of mine who was in Oz had hers done quicker. Call ACWA and explain, they will tell you if they can do it quicker. Pm me and I can advise you on the assessment as the longest part for me was understanding what they wanted from me. I ended up sending a book of stuff. It's the five core competencies that confused me, as I didn't gave an agent but I can help if you need.
jodipodi
Hi all, can anyone tell me....when you mention matching core competencies, does this apply under both category a & b? On the website it only mentions for category b? http://www.acwa.org.au/Default.aspx?PageID=3397500&A=SearchResult&SearchID=5855497&ObjectID=3397500&ObjectType=1 Well done to all who have gained their visas...very jealous x
