Debbiewilk
Hi guys, just trying to weigh up the difference between shipping a container from Aberdeen to Fremantle, I've gotten a few quotes but not sure about the import tax on items. Is it just as well buying new when we get out, as essentially we are going to have to get some items until the container turns up? If we were shipping we would filling a 10 or 20ft with just general household items, living and bedroom furniture and himself would have to bring his beloved tools!if I'm getting one I'm filling it up basically! elfie
hi We weighed up the costs of shipping all and sundry and decided to ship the lot minus the washing machine and fridge freezer as they do not travel well plus the age etc so sold them off prior to leaving. My husbands work tools were shipped only a small ammount of diy tools were shipped but other tools he had were donated to most of the men in family. Garden tools etc were sold on ebay due to quarantine rules The container with insurance cost 4500 pounds soz lap top does not have a pound sign -purchase here! You have to cost your belongings the age and condition and then cost here in Australia. I knew what we had cost more than 4500 pounds an inequivalent of about $7000 it would have cost us more than $7000 to purchase here. Example I have a dyson animal ball hoover in the UK cost me 300 pound here they are not short of a $1000. But is a decision you alone have to make. We shipped a 3 bedroom house and it fitted into a 20ft container with some room to spare. Good luck - Edited November 28, 2012 by elfie

Guest gormusoglu
No tax on importing used personnal household items or tools for immigrants or workers Hi, just reading your posts. Doesn't anyone sell secondhand stuff in local newspapers or carboot type sales? My shipping will cost us £3500 but to be honest, apart from my cooker, all our stuff is really old and can do with replacing. Also, can anyone recommend a shop with a website that sells white goods and furniture so i can check out new prices. Thanks
Guest pom on the move
We brought some things, beds, childrens cupboards & toys, Computer, Bikes, Big things that were gifts that would cost more to buy when we got here. We then bought sofas, tv, desks etc from the Quokka paper. People also have garage sales, not that many car boots but some. Other is Gumtree but you have to be in oz before you can post items wanted on it. It all depends on if you have items you really want to keep & you said you most could do with replacing so if you feel that way you are probably best re sorting and selling as much as you can that end, then looking 2nd hand here to start with, our 2nd hand stuff we bought is some of the best stuff we have owned, just got to look in the right places. Don't bother with lots thing electrical unless you have lots of adapters to bring cheaper that end. Big stores here Big W, Kmart all sell kettles toasters cheap. If on the other hand you had really good furniture & didn't want to part with it I would say bring as much as possible just get it insured. Things here are not cheap but shop wise 2nd hand and you will find lots, also save sleeping on air beds for weeks while waiting for you stuff to arrive. :-) Good Luck x
ali
We brought everything that wasn't fitted (brought tumble dryer and washing machine too and got another few years out of them). The cost of replacing everything we brought would have outweighed the cost of the container, having said that once we arrived, we also still bought - outdoor furniture, BBQ, 2 beds and other items. Guest Mani
Hi there this is a really helpful post thank you. We are moving next year and have the removals people coming in next week to give us a quote. Is it worth bringing the dishwasher and fridge freezer? I know someone mentioned that fridges do not travel well but did anyone bring theirs? Also do you know if things like rice, lentals, spices are allowed to be transported over in the container? I bet they have restrictions on stuff like that don't they? I was also thinking about stocking up on toiletries and washing detergents and the like when they are on offer and ship them off. Would this be allowed do you think? Thank you guys x
ali
This site should tell you what is and isn't allowed. Unless you use a brand of detergent/toiletries that you can't get here I personally wouldn't bother to stock pile before you come. You'll find they have most things here.
