lawrence33
Hi Please could someone help with our confusion over medical insurance and medicare?? We are due to arrive in Perth beginning of March. Our visa agent obtained Bupa private helth cover for us to obtain the 457 visa but my husbands new employer said not to activate this when we arrive. Can we sign up to Medicare on the 457 visa? I want to be covered for dental and ambulance so I presume I need to have some private cover for this? Being on a 457 visa do we need to hold private insurance for the validity of the visa as we dont was to invalidate the visa in anyway? and lastly when I search for private cover it mentions a 'rebate tier' do we qualify for this being on a 457 visa? Oh and one last question sorry!!!! do we pay fr doctors/dentists at each visit? Hope someone can help Its a very stressful time and as this is an important part for our adventue we want to make sure we are covered in the right way and not paying for what we dont need!! Thanks Donna
basicweb
We have just been through this with our newly arrived family - If you come from a country that has a reciprocal health agreement, then you can get medicare even on a 457 visa. So coming from UK you will be able to get this, just visit the local medicare office when you get here and fill in some forms. This then gives you adequate cover for your 457 visa requirements, and you can cancel the medical insurance you needed to prove to get the visa. The above is my interpretation only form the information on the DIMIA website http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/457-health-insurance-faq-visa-holder.htm
ali
You will need private cover for dental, optical to get a rebate on treatment and glassess (eye tests are bulk billed).

Rossmoyne
You would be wise to also take out Ambulance insurance. If you are taking out private medical cover for dental, optical etc, most policies can include Ambulance cover. Best to check though cos you could be up for $700 - $800 for an ambulance trip. Is the ambulance cover not part of the services covered by Medicare for British Citizens as per reciprocal health agreement?
