Hi all

i have just completed my plumbing practical at the college of North West London and if anyone is booked in for future plumbing practicals please do not worry, as many posts on here have said, if you are a plumber you will not struggle with what they give you to do.

If the guys that were also on this assessment want to keep in touch with me that would be good as if and when we all get to Oz it is always nice to stay in touch....

Cheers

Steve

Hi steve,

Well done on the assessment. I am also a plumber that done my assessment in north west london. I'm now in northern suburbs of perth and been here for 8 weeks. There is more hoop jumping when you get over here but plumbers are earning bucket loads of cash. If your employed and experienced, you can expect to earn $40 - $65 per hour but if you want to go it alone which is the route I'm taking, you can expect to earn up to $250 per hour (no that isn't a typing error).

Most firms are charging a call out fee of around $100 which includes the first 15 mins and then they are charging between $30 - $60 per additional 15 mins.

I have been doing some research and it is expected to charge around $600 for a WC changeover with all isolator valves in place.

Don't expect to be working straight away as you need to apply to the plumbing board for a temporary licence to be able to get on a migrant conversion course and they run them as and when needed.

If you need any other info let me know and I'll try and answer them for you as I know what it's like trying to find info out when your in the uk

Regards

Regan

Hi Regan,

Thanks for that info it is great to hear that......In the UK we are hearing so many conflicting stories with regard to work in WA and to hear from a plumber that is actually over there is great, you say about hoop jumping when you get there well i am still trying to get through all the hoops they put in front of me here.....I have a friend in Baldivis who moved there in August, he is a chippy he says it is the best thing he has ever done moving there and he is also earning well. I am at the "Expression of interest" stage of my application, everything is so involved isnt it......The UK should have been this stringent 10 years ago.....

Thanks again

Steve

Hi,

I know exactly where your coming from as a lot of the competency groups don't match exactly what we do. I filled out the paper based assesment and got a positive out come and I to have limited experience with irregation. I think as long as you can tick the vast majority of the box's you should be ok. We used an immigration agent who did all of this. She was very good and thourough and made sure every cert was in place before my paperbased was sent off.

Hi regan, I'm a plumber and have been for around 17 years. Me and my wife have our PR visa and are coming over in a couple of weeks for a 3 week validation trip. I only have Nvq level 2 but working on the tools for 17 years running my own jobs domestic and have site work experience. I know I will have to go back to collage when we move over for good on December 26th.

Would you know if there is any thing I can sort out while I'm over there in July ? Maybe to get things moving for when I'm back in dec. any help would be great

many thanks

scott.

Hope it's all working out for all you plumbers.

Hi Scott,

All I can say is if you want to stay plumbing then dont fight the system. You will need to go to the building commission in west Perth with all docs, resume, Certs, vet assess passport photos etc and then pay the money for a restricted tradesman licence. This allows you to enrol on a migrants course. With this licence you can book and organise everything from the uk as sometimes they only run the courses every three months. Personally I would go to mpa skills as they are more helpful and professional whereas I've just finished a course with challenger and they are anti poms and make it very difficult for you.

I hope this helps and is only my opinion.

Regan dont know where you heard that about challenger did my class g gas licence there and they were great.Have you done your contractors licence and there is not a firm in perth that pays $40 to$60 an hour on the cards try $35 and you need a decent client base to do your own thing talking to a plumbing inspector the other day and he said it takes at least 5 years to build that up.Talking to other plumbers things are deffo getting slower work wise.

Hi guys, I'm also a plumber and did my Vetassess in Belfast a few months ago, very easy assessment. We've now submitted our visa application and just waiting to hear from a Case Officer, hoping to move out there in November.

Regan are you currently working as a plumber? I've looked online at sites like seek.com and all the plumbing jobs on there ask for 5 years WA experience and things like that, where's the best place to look?

Cheers

Hi Chris,

Yes I'm working as a plumber /gas fitter. This is my second job since being here. Most of the jobs advertised on the websites are asking for min 5 yrs wa experience and most of them do not reply. The only way I got in was to do some door knocking and networking. Ask for high money but be willing to accept a lower wage for a short period until you've proved yourself. There is loads of work, you just need to find it. There's a lot of negative comments on these sites but you just need to push through the crowds and make an impression.

Good luck and hopefully see you on a building site soon.

Great post Regan, we all need some positives feed back, I think reading all the negitive posts people worry about giving up a good job here in the uk to find they will struggle to find work in perth. It may be hard at first but like you say knocking on doors and pushing your self to get that break it can be done. Looking forward to it.

Hi all im a plumber from the uk, ive been plumbing for 6 years back home, and pipe fitting for a year over here. I have a temporary plumbing license and im going to put myself through a refresher coarse through mpa skills as required by the plumbers board. Im on a 457 visa but wish to apply for pr now, which requires me to obtain a skills assessment. I was just wondering whether someone can just guide me through the vetassess process as im confused on where to go before i start throwing money at it? how long did it take? which one did you do? how much did it cost??

Thanks

Similar to Danny above... My partner is on a 457 visa as a roof plumber here... We're applying for 190 & waiting to complete Vetassess as a general plumber... There's a period at the beginning of his employment 2002-2008 whereby the company has now stopped trading and they haven't kept any records. They've provided a great reference on headed paper with graphics but does anyone know of we're going to get stung with having no supporting documents? We're trying to contact inland revenue but its been time consuming & just trying to be prepared incase they don't come through- Thanks
