advice for newbie with job offer

Hi,

Some probably dumb questions, so please bear with me...:cute:

I'm having a final interview for a job in Perth tomorrow and it's looking good.

Regarding visas, I've had advice from friends and family and I suspect it's a bit out of date. It's mostly been based on 457 visa, but I think the 189 visa is a better option.

Myself, wife and 5yo son. Myself and wife both on the skills shortage list and get 75 points each. Yay!

I'm sure there's a beginner's guide somewhere on the forum, but I can't find it. So here's my understanding. Please correct me if I'm talking rubbish!

  • With a 457 visa, the onus is on the employer to confirm that you have required skills and they pay for the visa. Downside is that you are tied to the employer for 4(?) years, although you can apply for PR after 2. Visa can happen very quickly. (Prospective employer is talking about 2-4 weeks!).
  • With a 189 visa, the onus is on me to prove that I'm needed (hence the points test, etc) and I will end up paying for it (Oz$3000). Getting this 189 visa effectively gives me permanent residency status (maybe some subtle differences?), so I can work wherever I want, for anyone, or even set up a business (which my wife would like to do).

The employer wants me and my family in Perth in about 2 months time. Is there any hope at all of getting a 189 visa in time? Or am I stuck with the 457 visa? When I'm here on a 457 visa, can I apply for the 189? For the 457 visa, do I just relax and let the employer do everything or should I get involved? For either type of visa, is there really any point in using an agent? (The new Skill Select website makes me think I may as well do it myself but if a bit of cash to an agent makes it all happen faster, I'm happy to pay). And any recommendations for agents (or ones to avoid)?

A lot of questions! Thanks in advance for your sagely advice ;-)

That's the easy bit. Now schools, where to live, car, health,.....

  • 2 weeks later...

You can take the job and apply for the 189 when ever you want.

You will be involved in the 457. Once the nomination is done you will have to complete the forms for you and your family, upload requested docs and things. I dont think they routinly request medicals anymore for 457's unless you are working in a hospital or school.

The 457 visa is normally very quick - average is still i think about 4 weeks, compared to a 189 which is months.
