Hi everyone,

My husband and I are in the early stages of the migration process and I have been tasked with looking into a few areas which I hope that you can help with!

Pre-school Education:

We have 2 boys (currently aged 18months and 3 years). In Scotland a 3 year old is entitled to a free place in nursery 3 hours a day. Can someone please let me know what the education options are for pre-school kids in Perth?

We are looking to move to Perth, ideally the Secret Harbour area so any advice would be most welcome.

Renting Market:

What would your advice be on renting a property? What did you do when you first moved to Perth? Did you organise rental accommodation beforehand? And if you what did you do? Ideally we would be looking for a 3-bed property.

Visas:

My husband is an engineer but does not have a degree so he is currently working on the CDR paper. Again, does anyone have any advice on this as we are unsure how detailed to make the report. We have appointed an Emigration Officer but don't want to bombard them with questions at this stage.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Hi jackie, welcome to the forum! I can only help you on your rental question. We rented a holiday let for a month prior to arrival! It gives you the chance to look at different areas and for you, with the children, look at schools. The migration agent that you are using should expect questions from you, after all, you are paying for the privilege lol! Good luck! Someone lease will come along to answer your other questions.

What part of Auld Reekie do you live in at the moment? I am a Stockbridge / Comely Banker originally from way back in the day.

Anyway there is a post, on page 3 I think, under Forum, Migration Issues, First Twelve Weeks - Where did you Stay - How much did it cost? This has a few replies which should give you an idea of what a few people did on arrival re accommodation. However if you are in the early part of the process better add at least 10% to the costs because no doubt it will have got even more expensive by the time you get here.

Edinburgh to Secret Harbour. Chalk and cheese as I suspect you may know already. This site is packed with posts on location/ suburb information and so have a good search through everything and you should get a handle on things. Housing costs, rentals, transportation, schools etc. Bottom line as again you may know you pay for everything here and some unlike at home.

Hi Jackie

Welcome to the forum.

As far as I'm aware, Kindergarten is for for 15 hours a week (link: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsandyou/detcms/navigation/category.jsp?categoryID=12799924) and 40 weeks a year. I believe the 15 hours per week composes of 4 half days, hopefully some of the other members can confirm if that's the case or not. Kindergarten education commences at the beginning of the year for children who reach the age of 4 on or before 30 June. Pre-primary education commences at the beginning of the year for children who reach the age of 5 on or before 30 June. Kindergarten isn't compulsory but around 90-95% of children attend.

You should be able to find more info @ the Dept Education website - http://det.wa.edu.au/schoolsandyou/detcms/schoolsandyou/schools-and-you/pre-primary-and-year-7/Changes-to-the-early-years-of-school-benefit-children.en?oid=MultiPartArticle-id-13673320

Hi my little boy will be 4 in October and he won't start kindy till February 2014.There are a couple of places that offer prekindy here in Bunbury but they are full and only offer one half day a week.I think hes ready to go now but only option is to put him into a private childcare centre which works out very expensive.

Hi there, thanks for your comments. How did you organise your holiday let? Did you do it before you arrived in Oz? Any advice would be great : ) x

I've been here in Perth for 5 months. My husband and youngest daughter moved here 5 months again and we rented a home before we came...my husband actually looked at it and skyped it to me and we rented it. the area is Madeley - Darch and it has a lot of new homes. there is quite a bit in the Northern area of Perth. Schools are good. The independent school have a good reputation. Your boys might really like West Coast Steiner School. It's very international with an European curriculum in a very pretty area. The campus is treed and children are happy. There are a some other good private schools in the Northern Subs.

You can always ask to book a tour on line.

Cheers,

Constance
