Which comes first, house or school?

Hi

We are moving from Aberdeen to perth next month, hooray! My husbands work are putting us up for 6 weeks in apple cross while we find a house to rent. My 6year old son will be leaving his p2 class in Scotland and we will need to find him a new school. Having done a bit of research on houses and school, we are hoping to live around the cossletoe, subiaco, city beach up, to Hilary's areas. Hard to know where without seeing the place and houses first. So this means my son might be out of school for a while.

i would be grateful on others advice on how to start the school search. I have read the schools are strict that you live in their catchment area, which is understandable. So do you quickly find somewhere to live or do you contact schools ahead of arriving to set up visits for when we arrive. If so, how easy was this?

many thanks

I would imagine the House in the area you like a school /s as if it's state it will have to be in the catchment area ( its pretty strict here ) , unless your private then you can choose where you live if your happy driving to and from :)http://www.myschool.edu.au/ have a look at the links :)www.domain.com.au

You'd be pretty safe with most of the schools in those areas, most above the national average. I'd look at your budget re rent and try and find somewhere to rent first. I know Freshwater Bay Primary in Claremont usually has spaces and may take someone out of boundary, Nedlands and Subiaco Primary are large schools that may have spaces, Hollywood Primary usually has spaces.

Hi

School comes first. That was helpful. Did you find the right school yet. Have you looked at the Independent schools in the North..West Coast Steiner School is very receptive to Expats. It's really international with lots of European students. They teach German there. There are some great homes a bit north of the school that are very nice neighborhoods....Go on a tour...or contact the school directly by email or calling or just by showing up and asking to go on the next tour.

Cheers

four posts, all the same - clpsonoma, you're doing a good job advertising the school your kids go to. So when your child gets to age 13 where will she go then?

Had they been exactly the same i'd have deleted them as a duplicate post.

Welcome clpsonoma to the site, you are welcome to talk about the school you work at, however, I hope you'll also contribute with your experiences of living and working in WA

Oh yes...where else to go as they get older. I have found several great private high schools in the northern subs. Kingsway Christian High School is small and academic and personal. Dunscraig has some good high school in the area. Perth Waldorf School is not that hard to travel to on the train even from a northern suburb. Check them out. I have not heard great things from some of the Expats that sent their children to the International School..northern subs....My friend has year 7 student who is not so happy, she's an excellent student and says everything is a bit behind from where she is coming from, any school is an adjustment though.

Cheers,

Constance

Well...I do think that people should honestly take a good look at Steiner method because its a unique method of education for lower and upper primary. I thing that Scotch College has an excellent reputation and should be considered too.

Hillary is very pretty with all the contemporary beach houses and the great shopping near by. The train commute is easy in to the city and it's about 10 degrees cooler because it's so close to the ocean. And I feel it's still affordable compared to Cottesloe with it's older homes, and Subiaco with it's great downtown but houses seem on top of each other and city beach is lovely with mixed new and old but The Harbor at Hillaries and the pretty public beaches makes me always tell people to look there first.

A six year old won't notice the difference in the UK and Aus education system.

If you have PR, or 457 visa, you will get your son into somehwere and it's free, if there are places. We're only into 6 weeks of the acedemic year here!

School first, then find your accommodation. Accommodation......good luck with that one! six weeks will fly by....get house hunting as soon as you get here and juggle school and accommodation...

Good luck!
