Nikkis2000
Hiya, It goes without saying that when we come over we fully intend to embrace the outdoor lifestyle - I'm thinking running on the beach and surfing just for starters. However I am a bit of a gym bunny and sometimes you just can't beat a hard weights sesh or a combat class. What is the gym culture like over there? I only remember seeing one Crossfit gym on the way into Perth when we were there in Nov.Do there tend to be gyms in each suburb or are they all in town? Also what kind of facilities do you get I.e gym, studios and a pool or just the gym and/or studios? Also what sort of prices do they charge for a couple? Thanks! jamesw
I am pretty sure that most suburbs have at least one gym now a days
Mad Cow
We have a gym near us. We pay$110 per month for the two of us! And it's open 24/7.
Scot01
I belong to Lords in Subiaco and love it - it is a real community place and not just young people with perfect make up and latest gym gear. It has a pool, a huge range of fitness classes, tennis court, squash, and runs basketball, netball and five aside most evenings. It's run by the council. There's a creche and they have toddler gym during the week - and classes for pensioners and special needs so really great community feel. My yearly membership works out at less than $20 a week and I can go as many times as I want for that - I do pilates, aqua aerobics and aqua zumba (!!) and two circuit classes in the gym. And then have coffee in their good coffee shop. http://www.lords.com.au/ I have gyms nearer to where I live, I don;t live in Subi, but it's worth the drive. Fitness First is a franchise and have gyms all over Perth. The Universities have good gyms that the public can use. I can think of about ten gyms I could go to within 5k of where I live but Lords offers the full package.
fifi69
Loads of gyms everywhere from what i can see. Ive just recently joined one, i only looked at two that i could walk/cycle too, if i wanted to jump in the car and drive for 5/10mins i would have had even greater choice. The one that i joined is just a gym and studio (spinning), it has everything you need but no bows and whistles. A few screens showing some music channel but not the on board equipment screens that my UK gym had. Paying a lot less though $13 per week, no joining or admin fee and only 2 weeks cancelatation notice needs to be given. Like Mad Cows gym, this one is open 24/7, the same as the one across the road. Something i cant get my head round though is it is only manned by staff for a few hours in the morning and then a few hours at teatime (peak times?). When you join you get your own keycard, thats the only way you can get get in. Ive been there at 10pm and been the only person in, its a bit of a weird experience, they say they have CCTV monitoring 24/7 but not sure how quick you would get help if you were to suffer any injury. Health and safety.......welcome to WA lol
StraighttothePoint
Sports arena's are worth considering as well. Being near one is an extra bonus because there are not that many. My wife goes to pump, body balance and some other very energetic sounding stuff three times a week and then after each goes for a swim which she says is why these places have it over gyms. Cost wise maybe a bit more than gyms but far wider choice of activities as well as the usual same old same old equipment. She thinks gyms are very lonely places where you may not get enough push from those around you whereas if you are in the classes at the arena you do not want to the one giving up all the time I just think it is all a big waste of effort but given she has been doing this lark since she was in her early 20's, and is now just shy of six-0, then I will bow to her greater level of knowledge and experience. So perhaps when deciding on where to live in Perth just double check if you will be near an arena as well as a gym just to give yourself options. I like the sound of the community feel though, that's the sort of gym we belong to here. Not one of the soulless places you can get sometimes. It certainly sounds like there'll be somewhere that fits the bill!!
