Fully Furnished Seekers Beware!

Recommended Posts

G'day!

We booked a room initially for the first week as we didn't want to risk booking somewhere for an extended period of time- smart move in our opinion. Just wanted to warn people if they are looking for something furnished to be aware of someone who advertises rooms as the "Upmarket Suburb Close to City Beaches". I know I can't put on the website address but this is advertised on Airbnb and Gumtree -All I can say is that if you are really bored and need a laugh, book an appointment to see the rooms! Talk about totally taking advantage of the market. Shanty Town comes to mind.......You have to go and see it to believe it.

Thankfully we have just found another place to stay with an exceptionally welcoming Australian family - the kind of people you feel like you have known your whole life after talking to them for about an hour! We move in on Tuesday and will then start looking for work :).

Hi Wallywombat - I did some google research and I think I found your place, on AirBNB. The photos look okay although the bedrooms look pretty small - what exactly was the issue?

We always say to potential tenants that if they want to see the property, they are more than welcome. We're also happy to let friends/family look through on their behalf. Nothing worse than turning up to a place that isn't what you thought it would be!!

Hi Jen,

I know - the pictures were technically not lies but they weren't a full depiction!! What it didn't show was all the clutter around the house, there were renovations going on to the deck in the back; we had to walk through the garage (which was just full of stuff - furniture projects and tool etc -the best way to describe it is junk storage garage!) to get to these rooms. The room we had didn't even have a window - but the owner was excited to show us the air vent that was just put in. My husband describes the downstairs as a labyrinth of hidden rooms. The actual decor and furniture in the room that we saw was good but it was just the surrounding which were crazy. It seemed like a fire hazard to me. They weren't even proper doors to the rooms, they had sliding wooden doors. Yes, the room we looked at was small and you wouldn't want to spend any time in there other than to sleep.

The thing that was really funny was that she was so proud of her work and bragged about how she was filling a niche in the market. I guess she is because there are some positive posts on the site...but I don't think that it would be a comfortable place to stay while trying to settle in. Especially if renos were happening - the shared kitchen was right next to the deck project LOL!

I just think for that kind of money, you can do a whole lot better - we certainly have. I can see how your services offer so much value as there is such an air of uncertainty when renting from individual owners.
