Hello,

I have been lurking for a while on the forums and i must say what fantastic help and advice you all give!

My girlfriend and I are both 24 and looking to move out to Perth. We have family (Not immediate) whom are going to put us up and look after us for as long as we need. I have been in Engineering recruitment for 3 years with 1 year of account management (Its a big account and i have some impressive clients under my belt, its more of a HR role). We are both degree qualified.

Although recruitment is on the skills list its not something i want to do with my life. The original plan was to take a 1years working visa and try to get sponsorship once we are out in Perth however after reading the forum that seems like no company is going to want to take the risk of me going home.

So... what should i do? i really have my heart set on Perth as we both love the city but i don't want to work in a bar for 6 months and be sent home!

What can graduates do?

Am i wasting my time and efforts?

The relatives both work in O&G and say we will get work but i honestly don't see how and what Visa to even go for.

Any industry or role,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post, have a good day!

A friends nephew has come out on a WHV can't remember his qualifications off the top of my head but he's currently driving a tractor to get his 3 months in so that he can extend the WHV by a further 12 months. In the meantime, he's exploring PR visa and sending off for the skills assessments so that he can apply for PR rather than a sponsorship.

Thanks for the reply Ali, would you say he has a chance at PR ? given his only driving tractors? Sounds like a route i would be happy to go down!

Thanks again,

You're not going to work in a bar for 6 months and then be sent home, the visa is valid for 12 months for a start! If recruitment is on the skills list and you want to stay in Australia then you have a couple of choices. Come over having already prepared an EOI (so got your skills assessed) and then apply for PR once you get here, if you get invited to apply and progress like that then you'll go onto a bridging visa until your PR comes through. Just because you got in on a recruitment skills assessment doesn't mean you have to do it once you're working here - once you have PR you can do what you like.

Another option is Company sponsorship - but is less guaranteed and you'll have to do recruitment for a little while longer. Come on the WHV get a job in recruitment (if you can) and impress enough that they want to sponsor you. This is getting harder and harder, and personally if you're already on the skills list I'd go down the PR route - at least that way you aren't tied to an employer and are free to live and work as you choose.

I came on a WHV in June 2011, got a job that was willing to sponsor in September 2011 and got my PR in May 2012. But I'm tied to my employer until May 2014, so can't leave and do something else because of the risk of visa 'cancellation'. It's fine if you love your job, not so good if you don't!!

If you are eligible to migrate permanently under your current qualified occupation, then that is the best way to go, and you will not have to work specifically in Recruitment once you are here. If you come on a WHV and then find sponsorship under the 457 category, you will be committed to work in that job until such time as you can apply for and get PR, which will take a few years. You could also apply for PR and come over on a WHV in the meantime, but keep in mind that you will have to re-enter the country once your PR is approved, to activate the visa. There are possibly other options for you as well. Oh to be young and qualified :)

Lol, no he has a qualified occupation that is on the skills list but he thought he'd try before buying so to speak. The tractor is his regional work in order to qualify for a 2nd WHV.

Wow what fantastic advice! I think i will take a look into the skills route. I was going to go through a 457 as company's where already interested in my experiences but A) its not something i want to do and B) i would feel horrid if i was tied to a company as you said Nico :) Brilliant stuff folks, i will talk it over with the family in Perth and report back! Looks like WHV then try for PR once im settled.

Thanks again folks!

Maybe worth looking at getting over here on a 457 and then applying for PR when here? At least on 457 you would not have restrictions for only 6 months with the employer?

However a large proportion of my clients are currently on 417's, and they have been offered sponsorship having demonstrated their skills to employers.

I love Chooks comment, to be young and qualified!!!

Sounds like you at least have some options and irons in the fire!

Good luck

What positive advice, my fear is that no one would want to employ me on a 417. My skills are with people management/business/marketing and not in the golden engineering opportunities Perth is known for. Do employees give the rite person a chance? personally if im being honest i would rather hire a local chap than take the risk on a WHV chap like myself! That's my biggest worry.

Thanks again everyone :)

Hi Digdig

IMO the job market is definitely slowing down now. Only today a friend of mine told me that she was one of 150 applicants for a customer service role. Yes, most employers would probably prefer to employ a permanent resident or citizen, however if the best person for the job can not be found they have to look further afield. If you apply for most permanent visas offshore you will have to be offshore when the visa is granted. So, if you come to Australia on a 417, you can apply for your skills assessment and IELTS on shore (if needed) and then lodge on shore. In MOST instances you will then go on a BVA whilst waiting for your visa to be granted, therefore remaining and working whilst you wait. You can always request a waiver on condition 8547 after you have lodged your visa, therefore allowing you to extend beyond the six month working criteria. Half of my 417 clients seem to lodge their visas a week or so before their current visa expires, therefore getting a BVA. Another client did not have enough time to prepare her application so she went from a 417 to a student visa on a 3 month course to allow us time to prepare her RSMS application. Great for her as she is now gaining a valuable qualification in her specified field.

Being under 30 with a 417 option you are potentially in a very good position. Generally it is easier to find employment in Australia rather than from overseas unless you have oil and gas experience!
