tensovereignfold
Just thought I'd ask all those who have left this small island what they miss the most (apart form family and friends), the great British home comforts or just things you cant buy or afford to buy ...... I guess things like a hot bowl of chicken soup while watching it rain cats and dogs will not be there !!!! Also what is it they you really enjoy and didn't think you would ?? portlaunay
I honestly don't miss anything. There are things that I'd like to experience again in my life but England is not the only place I can get them and would be the last place I'd go to do so. I may be different to many people - England never felt like home. From the first time I left the country for a holiday at age 10 I realised the rest of the world was incredibly exciting place. Adjutant
Having just come back from our last Scottish Easter Break up at Creiff, i will definitely missive the scenery around the Perthshire and the Scottish Highlands - especially the snow capped mountains this time of year. 10 days until we fly out !! ali
Can't say there's anything we really miss that we haven't been able to find an alternative for food wise.
Guest guest9824
For me, I will always miss the history, culture of places like York, Edinburgh, Stratford etc. I miss being able to get to Europe and enjoy places like France, Portugal, Greece and Spain. I am not a Bali fan, so for us, we travel and see Australia, Melbourne being a favourite especially St Kilda, a beautiful place by the sea. If we ever decide to leave Perth, St. Kilda in Melbourne or Manly in Sydney would be on the list of places to live, lotto win permitting! pea

Me too. I really miss the beauty of Scotland, the colours of Autumn and Spring, the snow on the hills. Christmas markets, mulled wine, single malt and haggis. Thankfully I have a piper in the hoos! It does not happen often granted but it does happen. Once you are acclimatised you do feel it.

Ideally I'd like Foxtel to be identical to SKY. Not that I've got much time for telly, but when I do switch it on there is nothing decent to watch or I'm just not finding it. portlaunay
tensovereignfold said: hopefully a brew still tastes like a brew I hate lager, mostly drank stout, porter or bitter in the UK and my knowledge of Aussie beers was based on VB, XXXX and Fosters, none of which are particularly Australian as it turns out. You may be pleased to learn that there's fantastic micro-brewery industry here with some excellent ales. Of course, living in Freo I'm biased towards Little Creatures and both their Pale and Rogers are lovely. Guest beers at the Sail and Anchor in Freo are always interesting and then there's a bottle shop called The Freo Doctor on Arundel Street just down the road to me. Their selection is excellent and they also do a couple of really good tonics to go with my gin collection. If you need to save cash then there's also the DIY brew. Not home brew, but brew your own. I go to the Billabong Brewery in Myaree but there are others around. It works out at around $2 a bottle and the Creamy Porter is particularly good for winter. Here's some photo's I took last time I was in there; As you can see, it's all very professional and super cheap. It's also pretty good fun making it up and bottling once it's ready, I highly recommend it.

If we're discussing tea then no, it doesn't taste like the UK, or it didn't until we got ourselves a water cooler/filter. There's a strong chemical taste to the water here that boiling doesn't mask and I think tea tastes horrid. We now make tea using water from our cooler and it's lovely though I was never a fan of Tetley, et al, Ceylon Orange Pekoe for me please. With a slice of banana bread (Or just stick to beer)

liloharry
I'm currently on 'holiday' in the UK...just been up to the lakes for the day, I have missed popping into farm shops for goodies & a nice cheap pub lunch. Having had numerous cuppas since I arrived, I think I prefer aussie bushells tea. Sky tv is miles better but I've only had chance to watch it for about 30mins (kids hogging the telly with the Xbox).... Now that I have come back here for a visit it has made me realise I don't actually miss that much!
Mad Cow
Don't miss much at all but if I had to name something it would be walkers cheese n onion crisps, but I can buy those here lol!

Scot01
The longer you are in Oz the less you miss. Every time I go back to the Uk I think it is nice seeing certain things in the supermarket but I just think that I can get the same thing in Oz. I eat things for nostalgic reasons when I am back but don't crave anything here. The first few years I use to stock up on M&S knickers etc but now I hardly buy anything because it is available here and I am familiar with what is in Oz high street shops. I like to see mountains etc but the sky is usually grey and I prefer it here.
Rossmoyne
After 21 years in Oz, there is little that I miss in England apart from people. However having said that, when I go back on holidays, I have to eat a large Gammon Steak at least once a trip, and go to a few of the local pubs around my old home village in Sussex. Oh and I always have to do a walk along the South Downs too. Gearing up for my next holiday at the moment and also on the list of "must do" is another visit to the Eden Project in Cornwall and a visit to Borough Food Market on a Friday.
