Rossmoyne
Hi everyone, just wanted to say I had gammon today in the slow cooker and it was another success! It cost less than £4 from Mr T and tonight we had a Gammon dinner (2 adults, 3 children) and I have portioned the rest into 2 separate portions. 1 will make pasta carbonara tomorrow and the other will do Spanish omelettes on Tuesday. Not bad for less than £4 for all of us and its not often something is eaten by everyone in the family. Again, even the 3 year old ate it. Simple to make, I just placed the gammon in the slow cooker with a cup of water and cooked for 8 hours! It fell to pieces on the fork. OH MY GOD GAMMON!!!!!!! I am salivating just thinking about that..... Just don't get it in Perth and it is the first meal I have to eat when I go back to UK on a visit....... send me a goodie bag PLEASE!!!!!! jac2011
Wow, I didn't know you couldn't get it in Aus! Surely it must be available somewhere...
portlaunay
You can certainly buy a nice joint at Princi's the butchers as well as Frank's in Freo. Any decent butcher will be able to joint the pig however their customers want it.
Rossmoyne
Not readily available though and incredibly expensive I have found... .and on the occasions we have splashed out and bought it, it just didn't taste right!
midwife momma
lots of super ideas on this thread. Some of my own tips:- do a mass cook in one day. I do one massive shop ( lists at the ready) and make lasagne, chilli, cannelloni, pies, lamb koftas, samosas , macaroni cheese, sausage casseroles, shepherds pies the list goes on. I find if you cook everything on one day nothing goes to waste. Its very tiring but so satisfying and works out super cheap. I have bought tinfoil takeaway trays ( with lids) from Costco, £6.00 for about 80 trays. It means I can use a sharpie to write what is in the tray, how many it will feed and temp of oven and cooking time, perfect for hubby n teenager. The trays also control portion control. In the past I would make a pan full, serve up, often the kids would leave loads which would then get thrown away. I insist that everything is served with veg or rice or potatoes and salad. There is a lot less waste. I also bulk meats out with lentils, beans such as borlotti ( dried ones are way cheaper that tinned). I am on a money saving mission. I make / alter clothes when I can and I've just started making vintage style aprons to sell at local craft fayres to increase the oz money pot. Plus taking any extra bank shifts when I can, the dream WILL become a reality
travelchic
I need to get some of those containers. Can't tell you how many times I've cooked pasta for my bolognaise that I've defrosted only to find its chilli and I should have cooked rice lol. nollie
we are on the savings game big style Do a weekly food planner, stick to the list and shop in aldi/lidl, saving us around £50 a week (amazing should have done it years ago) Sending hubby to the sheds this weekend to clear out and sell what we don't need Taking all small clothes to clothing banks for cash Looking at everything asking do we need this, or do we want this keeping our virgin tv for a little while longer but getting rid of dishwasher and tumble dryer Turned the heating off in February, telling kids to stick on a jumper or 7 if they are cold. Not going out unless cheap or free We will get the money together My mums response to this (she does not want us to go) " you will hate England more if you live like this" we don't hate England at all, and my answer is "no it will get us ready to be broke for a while in Australia"
jac2011
We bought a ROKU a month ago and got rid of Sky altogether, we are a family of 5 with children 10,8 and 3 and we haven't missed it one bit. Plus at the mo (don't know if it will change in the future) we no longer have to pay Tv licence either as its not live TV. £40 a month saved on tv licence and our Sky package. Although we do spent £5pm on Lovefilm or Now TV or Netflix depending on what series we are watching at the time. The ROKU was the best out when we bought it from reviews, however I think the new googlechrome is out and that's slightly cheaper. I am also meal planning monthly now. I do 4 weeks worth of meal plans. I do a huge shop in Tesco for basics, pasta, rice, cereal, nuts, etc. I do a big shop in farmfoods for meats, chips, bread and milk (although I top this up every week) and then I save £10-£20 to go to local greengrocers. We are a family of 5 and our food bill works out £65pw including toiletries etc and treats. We are also eating healthier than ever. This also includes packed lunches for 4. Julesktm1
Pity you can't knit tenners lol. I take home magazines the patients have left then bring them back in again for other patients ha ha. i have gotten rid of the tumble dryer to save lecky and have gotten rid of the dishwasher to save on water (on a meter). I did give up smoking but to be fair that wasn't because of the money, I went out on a girls night out, smoked too much and drank too much and was dying a slow and painful death the next day (the only trouble with a leg bag is you can't measure your drinks properly) and never touched a cigarette again. And have never wanted one since. Bonus. I also buy them colour catcher things to shove in the washer. Then I can stick all the colours in and do one wash instead of 3 lol. Colour catcher thingies wow. Haven't heard of those sound interesting and very clever thanks going to look onlinexxxx
travelchic
You can get them in the supermarket. Debs
Rossmoyne
Being retired I have to really watch my expenditure and I have started doing my food shop every 8 or 9 days. As I live on a weekly budget, every few weeks I don't need to go food shopping and it gives me a bit extra to shove in the "I want to go to England next year for a holiday" fund.! I used to do this many many years ago and had forgotten all about it until I had a turn out of the pantry and kitchen cupboards recently and realised that I just keep buying the same stuff and did I really need to have 10 tins of tomatoes? Made a conscious effort to start using up said over bought items and then remembered the delayed shopping trick. Working so far. Mind you I only have to feed me and my fluffie family members now. odies
I should be saving, I have been so good knowing I hopefully will not be in the uk next winter , watching food shopping etc. not been clothes shopping just looking at summer things which I can take. Then what do i do yesterday in Chester buy myself a barbour gillet, why goodness knows ,felt right at the time hubby kept saying what do I need that in oz for, stupid what a waste of money. Back on track from today only Barry concerts to waste money on then onwards and upwards

Bibbs
I buy in bulk the stuff I use often, from the Cash and Carry. So it's 100x bog rolls at a time, boxes of cleaning products (usually 6 or 12 bottles in a box), non perishable food stuff (tins, spices, sweets). I also commute via public transport, leaving the V8 for weekends. I also browse gumtree for stuff I want and don't need 'new' (paintings, tables, books). jac2011
I cant remember if Iv mentioned it on here before but we have took a major leap of faith. Cancelled TV licence in the UK and Sky TV and bought a media player. 4 months in and we still haven't ran out of things to watch by far, with new things being added all the time. All we pay is Netflix £5.99 a month. If we run out on there we will move to Lovefilm. There is the odd thing we miss but with working full time we haven't particularly missed anything. Plenty for the children to watch too.

jac2011
We felt the same last year, that we couldn't live without it... However, its been far easier than planned. We said if we struggled it would be easy to reset it up. Its just a habit. I asked the kids if they had missed Sky and they were like 'What Sky?'! Even my 10 year old daughter who was tuned into all her Hannah Montana type programs day after day. My husband misses sports at times but he can watch certain games with online subscriptions. He says its worth it rather than £30 odd per month to Sky and £12 to TV licence. Especially when around Christmas we used to get the movie channels and added on sports (as it was obviously a bargain???) and that used to be over £50 or something silly. Shopping budgets are restricted too, if there is an economy brand we will try it. We shop in our local fruit and veg shop. Meal plan and only buy necessities not luxuries, although a bottle of wine at the weekend or 2 seems to still be a necessity with 3 children. Its going surprisingly easy and we are amazed at how much we used to waste. There is still room for improvement but we are getting there and saving far more than we could ever imagine. Charmedgirl
I've been selling everything on local Facebook selling sites rather than ebay, no fees that way and people collect. It can be a pain if they don't show but most have and some stuff I've sold for a lot more than it goes on ebay!

Jueglittergirl
We plan our weekly meals, then buy what is needed and not what looks good once we are out and about. Great savings made every time.
