hi all

my family and i have just started the application process and were going to perth. hows the work for joiners, and whats the best area to look for rent schools etc

cant wait

tony

Sure the joiners will help re the work issue but as gazza says it appears there are currently mixed viewpoints as the the volume of work available. All I know is that the paper is full of self employed joiners advertising their services and it was not like that a year or so ago when the adverts were much less in number.

This site is packed with all that type of information, and people's own individual views on much of it, so just have a good read through all the various threads and posts in the first instance and that will give you a feel for areas that concern you or you want to research. The bottom line is that everything here is driven by what you will be able to afford, and as it has been mentioned so many times on this site, that will determine where you end up living and what schools your kids have to go to. Best I am afraid will only be in terms of what the "best" is for you. Sure you will pick up on this as you read through this site.

Anyway here is your starter for ten in relation to a lot of the research you will need to undertake. Once you have read the basics you can then be able to ask more specific questions. Happy reading and good luck with it all.

Hey up Tony when are you looking at making the move

I read an artical in the West Australian newspaper yesterday that the housing minister wants to sell off loads of land to try and fetch the house prices down so people can afford them so that may create more work if its done

cheers stp

ive got a lot of reading to do.will we qualify for child beniefits as we just moved there

No worries.

Advice on this site seems to be in general terms try and work your budgets for when you first arrive here to exclude any family / child benefits because you do not want to be relying on something that may not get, may change and/or be removed in part. Big changes coming this year here politically and think it could effect all us middle income earners.

I assume you will be able to claim any family benefits based on what visa you will hold or be granted so check when you are applying what you will be entited to. As for what you could get just read through the Centrelink site under the Family heading, http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/themes/families Issue is that you would not get anything straight away anyway because there will be waiting time until any payments come through. Also by the time you get here things may have changed in the rules.

I do not suppose you recognise the photo / avatar in my posts do you? It is Lower Largo, Fife (near St Andrews) where I live fror part of the year. Where are you coming from in Scotland?

hi stp'

i wont be counting on any benefits i didnt realise we would even get some. we're from falkirk not far from st andrews

Falkirk what a coincidence. I am a die hard Jambo so hope your home town lot do well on Saturday against the Hobos!!

Family and child benefits are available to families earning below a certain annual income and/or where there is only a single wage earner in the family. Quite high annual income in some cases is allowed and you can still apply. Typically families do it for childcare rebates, if they have children below 19 and also to help with schooling costs. You simply register with Centrelink, all done online now, and then any payment is based on wage slips and annual tax returns. It is not just for low wage earners and most folk apply if they are eligible. As I said though it will depend on what type of visa you are coming out on if you will be eligible or not. It should be clear during the visa application process.

sat the ielts exam on sat , didnt think it was too bad. Done well on three, so so on the writing hopefully the other three will get the average up

An average number doesn't count. Didn't for me anyway. Had to have 7's in everything to have my skills assessed and 8's in everything for the 20 points.
