As an update to the original query at the beginning of the thread, I found work 5 weeks after arriving in Perth and start on Monday. It does depend on the specifics of your experience. I had 3 years of working with SAP in the UK and that got me in the door of BHP Billiton (a 7 month contract) despite having no experience in mining.
