Stevie G
Its a small farming town about an hour from Perth. There really isnt much there. I would not recomend you consider it until you visit I would have much preferred to have lived in Northam than where I am now. I actaully think that Northam is not a bad little town and has plenty of shops and you could at least get employment there. I think you shoul;d check it out. SaffanZimbo
We have just done our reccie to Perth / WA and visited extended family in Northam. It is a small little town with a high indigineous population. Our friends love living there but mentioned that they had to send their 3 boys to finish their education in Perth as the local high school only goes up to Year 10 (?). This proved quite expensive. The town itself is small and has a very large and modern Immigration Detention Centre on the right hand side as you turn off the main highway into Northam. Northam itself has limited shopping and one 1 set of traffic lights and some of the housing we saw was lovely on large plots.. but lots of run down housing as well. There is a lovely river running through the town and a large children's playground which our 2 girls really enjoyed. There is an annual kayak/canoe race/event which attracts local and international particpants and sounds awesome. Our friends mentioned that the weather can be extreme with very hot and dry summers and cold, wet winters (with frost). There are several local government junior schools and 1 catholic junior school (which their boys went to) but only 1 high school which they mentioned was OK but very rough. Work opportunities in the town itself are limited though and my friend's wife has been lucky to find a part time job but her sons had stiff competition trying to find holiday work. Sorry..... didn't mean my post to sound so negative! Northam is I suppose a typical small town and can be what you make of it!
jodi73red
thank you so much for your reply we are looking at this area as the housing is something we can afford and be mortgage free also my husband wants to do a mechanics apprenticeship and the TAFE college there offers this. I want to do family day care and they are desperate for them there so that is a good thing for me Both of our children are only little so we are looking at the local catholic school and are viewing Northam as a 5yr plan place, just until we both get the qualifications we want and need. I am also into horses and the pony club there sounds good so am hoping we can get back into doing this. Any other advice and info is fantastic and greatly appreciated, I grew up in a very high indigenous area so this doesn't worry me to much. It certainly sounds as though you have thought this through and that you have a plan. Excellent way to get you involved in what you like both in terms of vocational training as well as establishing a foothold, debt free, in this area. You could only make a mistake and if so all you do is change direction and try again. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I have visited most of the small towns near Perth over the years and although Northam, was not my favourite, it was what it was - a typical Aussie country town - and you get exactly what is written on the tin. Good luck with the plans.
