andyplasterer
reading how people struggle to get jobs is making me have second thoughts about coming in the first place. I will be on a restricted regional area visa 489 and ive researched jobs for my trade in these areas and there are none advertised. What chance do i have when i can only work outside of perth and in remote areas, why do the government even offer these visas.
Plumber Paul
Has anyone in any trade got a job straight away:mad: I landed a job on my 3rd day in Perth. That was February 2012 and since then I've worked at 3 different companies (each being better paid and better work) and have always been employed full time. At the moment I'm working FIFO and doing poly welding.
SadieBacon
We arrived on a Tues and my OH got work on the Thurs by ringing adverts in the paper.....mind you that was a few years ago and I know the building trade has suffered from then so I doubt it would be as easy now. Are you finding it difficult to get work yourself?

I just don't get why DIAC are not up to date with the trades and skills that are needed.
andyplasterer
One of the places im allowed to go is Mandurah and it seems to have the biggest population so im thinking i might be better to try and settle there and hopefully get work within a short time period. Im coming out on my own and wife and kids following when ive got job and house sorted , i really hope this all happens within a couple of months so the family wont be seperated to long. Thanks for the comments andy
colinmacl
Took me 6 weeks and i am now on my second job and almost finished my electrical gap training nightmare that they put sparkies through! It is not easy to find work here when you arrive now that's for sure. So many people arriving here and loads of backpackers working cheaply too. Loulou
Hi Colin have 'spoken' to you on poms in on a few times you gave me the link for the regs stuff. we arrive on 26th May and have managed to get OH on course for 1st July provisionally! its in Thornlie. Any tips on best places to look for work for him? Have you nearly finished your Gap training now? Cheers Lou
colinmacl
They must be expanding the gap training as it was only at Balga before. Must be too many people enroling! I am almost done i just have to do a 4 day comms course but we were told when doing the capstone that it seems we now have to do 12 months work experience regardless of how quick the logbook is done. The goalposts keep moving. With regards to work i found the paper the best Wednesday and Saturday are the job days. Seek has jobs advertised but i barely got replies from there and agencies were not interested as i didn't have an A grade although that may have changed now that people are more familiar with the gap training system. You just have to persevere and be in the right place at the right time really. One of the big companies called Nielsons employ loads of gap trainers in their workshop building switchboards but it only pays $30 ph compared to the $46 they pay the guys on site! They might be worth a try.

Jkm
Hi Colin how long have you been out in Perth? I am a sparky and looking at getting out in October , what's the process for registering for gap training?
colinmacl
Hi Colin how long have you been out in Perth? I am a sparky and looking at getting out in October , what's the process for registering for gap training? 10 months now. You apply to energy safety for an electrical workers permit with your OSTR or ARTC. You can do it from the UK but don't do it too early as it only lasts a year and you will end up having to renew it.
