antonioeire
Hi guys What makes perth the place to live and will this be a great life for me and the family to spend the rest of our lives together.
Nic964
Its what you make it to be truthful, so you can't generalise. We live south of Perth, and Mothers day morning, we drove down to Rockingham, walked along a lovely sandy beach, had breakfast in an outdoor cafe, and just people watched. There was an art exhibition on the beach that families were looking at . No one rushing, nice weather, and great food. We find it a friendly low stress lifestyle. Don't expect everything you have in the UK (shopping, facilities, entertainment), but what they have got is enough. Nick
StraighttothePoint
How hard is that question to answer....... So many unknowns. Perth is what it is, a city with a small country town mentality pretending to be bigger than it actually is in the wider economic market place. It is way too expensive for what is on offer in terms of housing, general living costs are higher than anywhere else in Australia, new infrastructure is not keeping up with the influx of people and many struggle to adapt to life here. But on the other hand the sunshines, a lot, the winters are short, things are new and shiny in many places which a lot of people like and if you get lucky, get jobs on or near arrival and settle quickly then there is no reason as to why it is not a place to good place to live. As for "will it be a great" life well that depends on a lot of factors and a number of things falling into place. And that of course is different for every single one of us because we are all different.

verystormy
Only you can answer that. For some it is, for some it isnt. It is no utopia, it has all the issues that exist in any other developed city. Traffic can be a nightmare, you have to work, you have to pay the bill, you see things on the news that annoy you and politicians that are crap. It will be what you make of it. Can you imagine any newbies visiting PP for the first time and seeing this, they'd think think we were all barking! I know, and it was his first and only post too. I'd like to think he opens a new account on a forum every week and just copies and pastes the same thing about scaffold regardless of the purpose of the forum. rob-c
It depends on your expectations , where you came from and your lifestyle We still have to go to work, sit in traffic, go shopping and pay the bills. But as said before the sun shines and its warm, winters short. We bought a nice house in a quiet spot with a good sized outside space, national parks, forests, outdoor cinemas etc. it will be what you make of it. You will have all the challenges you have in the UK and some you won't have thought of, for us it's a much better life but don't bank on it being easier than the UK
Scot01
I think it is the little things that all amount to a nice life. So the sun shines, my son's wore shorts to school all year round, didn't need warm jumpers, coats, gloves, scarves, hats just to get out the door. At my nephews school in the UK in a small town in Scotland the doors were locked so you couldn't enter without ringing a doorbell. There were more wet plays than dry one. Here the classrooms open on to a verandah, assemblies are often outside in an under cover area, the kids are always outside at lunchtime, and play at school at the end of the day. I don't have to use a steering lock every time I go shopping. I can usually find somewhere to park where ever I go and it is usually free. Because Perth has a small population, the shops are rarely busy and standing in a queue is of more than two people is unusual. The speed limit is slow but that somehow adds to the vibe. The parks and beaches with free BBQ's are great. They're not vandalized. If you plan a BBQ for the weekend you know that the sun will probably shine. We eat outside in the garden most nights in the summer. It's not a perfect life, but give me this over days of rain.
Bibbs
We came from a good life, but thought we could improve it. We work longer hours, but spend less time commuting. We earn a lot more money, but we also spend a lot more money on "stuff". We have newer, nicer, better "stuff" (car, house, toys). We have more free time outdoors, living healthier lives. Even though we lost a lot of very close friends, we spend a lot more time socialising with friends here.
Guest mgglasby
Perth is still a little bit behind the rest of the world, it always has been and I think that is a particularly good thing. Sadly it is starting to suffer from the problems associated with large population centres everywhere. The good news is, Perth is only the entry point to Western Australia. If you want a quieter existence then other great options include smaller towns like Geraldton, Bunbury, Busselton and Albany. The weather here is getting a little strange but then the UK is even worse from the reports we have seen. Summers are hotter, winter storms seem to be more violent than they used to be but this is still one of the best places to live in the world. We have trevelled around Australia and overseas and although travel is fun we are always so thankful to get home to W.A. Like Britain we have our own multi-cultural experiment going on. So far it has been reasonably successful but how long it will remain that way is anyone's guess. The education system (government based) isn't great. Teachers are not being skilled as well as they should and standards have slipped sine I was at school. Housing here is horriby expensive because of the mining boom. Other prices are also higher than they should be. There isn't a great deal of competition in retail markets and the catch cry seems to be 'buy cheap, sell dear'. At the moment Australia is still one of the safest places to bring up children and the further you go from big centres like Perth, the more old fashioned values will be present. There are all sorts of pros and cons to every place but having lived in Perth most of my life I would not want to be anywhere else. If you want to know more about WA you can message me as I run a website all about this state that has a heap of info and photos. I won't put the link here because sometime forums like this consider it to be spam.
