beandownunder
Hi guys, OH did IELTS in April scoring 8.5 overall however I had booked him to do general when in fact he needs academic for his skills to be assessed by CPA ( yes, I was in the dog house!) anyway he resits on 22/6 but just wondered if anyone had any experience of academic test and how much more difficult it may be from general? thanks in anticipation, bean x

I scored 8.5 overall score, however I scored 7 in reading as I ran out of time. This was a pass as you need at least 7 in all four areas. They assess reading, listening, speaking and writing. You definitely need to practice, on the test papers and can buy a book. Look on eBay they usually have them for sale. I also bought a book call Target Band 7 on my ipad this was really helpful with lots of tips on getting best score. Hope this helps. Lindsay. travelchic
I have done both. The listening and speaking is the same on both tests. The reading was definitely more difficult. However, you can get more questions wrong on this test and still pass. Google IELTS calculator. The writing wasn't much different to be honest. I was asked to compare 2 library layouts. One from recents years and one from the eighties. That was for 150 words. The second one was to make an argument for and against teachers choosing lesson content in 250 words. That wasn't bad. I needed an 8 in all aspects which I got except for the reading. I have the IELTS 8 here. If you want it just pm me your address. It has 4 academic reading tests in it. I promised it to a friend but forgot to send it. But she has passed it now with flying colours so doesn't need it (sorry Karen but well done on the result!!). Levi
I have IELTS booked for July 6th. I'm expecting it to be a pain in the. CPA will also assess my skills. I've sent them a couple of questions via their contact page, no answer yet. Keeping everything crossed for the next year! : D

ekulwi
I wld say do some research on what they are looking for each band and definitely practice... No matter how literate you are preparing and knowing the format of each section makes a huge difference... Best of luck to your OH.
