funkft
Hi, Just wondered if there were any people in the drugs/community worker profession on here. I currently work for a young persons substance misuse charity, part funded by the DAAT (soon to be public health england), i have been in this field for 8 years and have progressed into a management role. I would be looking for similar work in and around Perth, doesnt have to be management though, as i wouldnt mind getting a feel for the grassroots, community based individual case work out there. I'm after any info at all really - salaries, opportunities, experiences etc.... Thank you
ali
Drug alcohol service are run by NGO's and not based within health services. If you google drug and alcohol services you'll get a list of organisations.
funkft
Thanks Ali - ive looked at a few of the organisations on WANADA, which was very useful. I was just wondering if anybody had any first hand experience of working for any of them Would love to hear people's experiences Also - a number of the job opportunities ive looked at dont state the salary, so its quite difficult to work out what our income would be

travelchic
Sure, why not joking aside, do you work in that sector? I don't work in that sector as such. I am a nurse and deal with quite a lot of oesophageal bleeds as a result of alcoholism. If some people who misuse alcohol could see the end stages of alcoholism it might have some impact. Nasty stuff. Debs
elfie
a good friend of mine died as a result of alcohol abuse, liver and kidney failure enough said.
Guest guest9824
a good friend of mine died as a result of alcohol abuse, liver and kidney failure enough said. I must admit Elfie, I am trying to cut down on having a glass or two during the week. Husband doesnt drink during the week, so I am like 'billy no mates' drinking on my own.I have been really good this week and had nothing. Its such a social thing too, no one sees the harm in drinking not like smoking which is seen as so anti social these days (used to do that too back in the day). Not sure what the answer is really, maybe seeing someone close to you dying from the effects of alcohol abuse would certainly have a massive effect and make you think twice about your intake. Moderation is the key, and I will moderate myself tonight (I know its still the week but its nearly weekend) and have a glass of rough red....... and contemplate my navel! pea

funkft
I had a 6 month contract as a community youth worker here: http://bridgingthegap.org.au/ Thanks James - if you don't mind me asking, how are the salaries for this type of work? Many of the jobs I've looked at don't actually say - they just refer to it as generous
jamesw
from my faint memory around $45K, but you can salary sacrifice which means you pay less tax. This was a couple of years ago now, so no doubt the pay would have increased.
itchyfeet
Hi, try seek.com I have been looking on there and have seen a number of jobs for drug workers though mainly with teens. Hope that helps. :-)
funkft
Thanks - I've been told that 45 - 50K is quite a poor wage in terms of the cost of living etc... Dont know what your thoughts are on this? Its hard to judge when I'm still in the uk
