Not looking for quality when we arrive, just the cheapest.

In the UK everyone knows that aldi, lidls, Asda is the cheapest, tesco mid range and waitrose highest. (of the main stream supermarkets)

Where should i be doing the food shop when we arrive. What is teh cheapest supermarkets in Perth NOR area?

Not really much help if you're NOR but last year we did Live Below the Line ($2 each a day for all food and drink for 5 days), so we researched the cheapest places around.

Obviously we looked at Coles, Woolworths and IGA but ruled them out very quickly.

Next was Canning Fruit & Veg market thinking that because it is a wholesalers it would be cheap. It wasn't.

Freo market was next, especially on a Sunday when they reduce all the stock.

But, far and away the cheapest place around was Galati's at the bottom of Wray Avenue, Freo.

Crikey Porty how did you do on 2 bucks a day. Hope you didn't go all Bear Grylls and drank your own wee wee:wacko:? What tasty morsels did you live off for that MUCH money? Intrigued....was it like Neil from the Young Ones and you ate mung beans and lentils for brekky, lunch and dinner. I couldn't do that, sad to think that people have to survive on that, good job there's soup kitchens.

Sorry OP for the highjack but I guess it's relevant.

It was actually easier than you think and we were surprised at the end of the week when we had to throw stuff away. We ruled out meat but to add flavour we bought a tiny bottle of soy and loads of onions which we caramelised or roasted and added to everything. We basically ate rice and veg for the week and drank water. The rules say that you can't eat anything you grow either so we had to stockpile eggs from our chooks for the following week.

This year we did it again but reduced it to $1 and added our own rule - that we couldn't eat what we'd grown but we could eat what we could scrounge and beg for or salvage from bins. All I can say is that Freo residents are extraordinarily generous and restaurant bins include some amazing free food!

Back on topic, if you want to eat cheaply then grow your own, keep chooks and ducks and if you really, really must........

drink your own wee wee*, mmmmm!

Woolworths and Coles are about par, IGA has different types of stores from supermarket to the corner store open late. The Supa IGA are usually pretty cheap but the others are expensive apart from their 'Get you in the door' specials. Best bet is 'growers type markets' and 'the spud shed' which is very cheap and has some unusual stuff from africa / asia etc. Spud shed have a great range of bulk meat specials etc where you can get large cuts and cut into steaks yourself.

If there is one thing I really miss it's my chucks, I had 3 (Chuck ran off with a fox and Mrs Polly the 2nd survived 3 cat attacks) and they were the most entertaining pets I've ever owned, loved a drop of Pinot and houmous with dips! How do they do over here and do they attract predators and if so how do you keep them safe?

We went to wanneroo markets and spud shed today for the first time. Was previously shopping at drovers in wanneroo and woolworths for nonperishables. Was nicely surprised at the prices at spudshed and wanneroo growers market. Spent $18 on a weeks fruit and veg. Was spending around 20/25 at drovers. Quality of some stuff wasnt fab but for others it was very good. Cucumbers at spudshed are 49c or 3 for 1 dollar!! They can cost up to 3 dollars each in woolies!

woolworths and coles have magazines at store entrances with their offers for the week. Offers run wed to tues. grab both and see whats on offer where and split your shop accordingly. Definitely worth the effort.

This is a photo of me holding an uninvited guest. Can you spot our chuck in the picture?

Don't worry though, we're a little to the North East of Perth (around 3,500km)

Another vote for the Spud Shed for cheapness. We've been shopping at the one in Jandakot for the past couple of weeks to save some cash and our weekly shop comes in at $50-$70 for two people. When we go to Woolies we spend $120 easy.

(I should point out that it helps that Spud Shed doesn't have as much choice, in Woolies we find ourselves throwing things in that we don't especially need or are "off list").

I actually like the fact that the wine aisle isn't in the supermarkets here, I've spent that much time in the wine aisle in the Uk my hubby has sent out 'search and rescue' teams to find me :) I've been gone that long! Now he does the same in Bunnings.....just goes off into the abyss for some screws :) never to be seen again.....

I love Bunnings. It's like a hardcore B&Q where the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and all the screws and hinges are in the right boxes on the shelves.

The power tool section is almost as good as waking up and realising that I am actually a Jedi knight.

The other day we were walking past and there was a bench at the front with a range of 'try before you buy' cordless tools. Morgan stopped me, nodded at them and said, "Go on dad, why don't you have a play?" I have no idea why I needed a saw/torch/drill/sander/grinder cordless combo but in the absence of the dark lord to defeat I felt it was the right thing to do. I came home and made a shadow board for them and until the Sith rise again, it'll keep me happy knowing they're nicely lined up in the garage.
