Redsquare
Well, we've been granted our Visa and the OH and I will probably be oving over in September. We've jumped through every hoop and the only thing the Australian government doesn't know about me is my inside leg measurement. We thankfully have somewhere to stay when we get over and I hope to hit the ground running by lining up some interviews for the week after we get there. I'll use the first week to sort out driving licences, medicare, bank accounts and tax codes the first week. However life is all work and tax codes and we want to enjoy our new life to the full. Therefore we need to look at the cultural side of life in Oz. I've tried to immerse myself in Aussie culture by watching all the Crocodile Dundee films and Mad Max. I've even watched a few episodes of home and away and next week I'll clean the BBQ and fire it up for the first time in years. Yet somehow I didn't think this was enough. Then I found out that ESPN shows live Aussie Rules (no idea what the rules are, it just looks like some men running round a cricket pitch kicking a rugby ball) . BUT I LOVE IT!! Anyway... the question; I need to support a team.. Eagles or Dockers?
portlaunay
No particular affiliation here but just wanted to say, forget Croc and Madmax, if you really want to watch an awesome film about Aussie culture watch The Castle. Brilliant film.
Redsquare
Just checked it out on IMDB. I'll be looking out for that. The Mrs will be pleased Eric Bana is in it!

Redsquare
And what's wrong with Perth Glory lol at least you will recognise some names, and don't need to worry about learning new rules I'd forgotten about football! I gave up on it a while ago, mainly due to the pampered prima donnas. I'll give Perth Glory a go, but the first time one rolls on the floor in agony because someone breathed on them... I'm off. StraighttothePoint
Just watch East Enders for what it is like in swathes of Perth nowadays!! If you live SOR and are poorer then support the Dockers but if you live NOR and are more affluent then the Eagles are the team for you!! If you live in either SOR or NOR and are the other way around in terms of wealth then bit of a dilema I am afraid Edited June 10, 2013 by StraighttothePoint

Hello Redsquare, and firstly congrats on getting your visas etc, it does feel a little like every orafice has been exposed and documented when you migrate doesnt it! Sounds like you are well and truly embracing the life you can make here in Australia. Firing up the barby is a good start, then get some snaggers and tinnies and you'll be right! As for Aussie Rules, have been to a derby here, and it is very much a family day out. Not really my cup of tea but I can see why families enjoy it. Nick Nacky Newey is an incredible human being, and I once saw him before he was famous in Bassendean Subway, he is massive!!!! Any ways you will learn all about Nick Nacky Newey when you get here (sorry about the spelling of Nick's name) So on to films to watch to get you in the mood .....Strictly Ballroom, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Rabbit Proof Fence (you will cry) and maybe Wool Creek (just to put you off ever stepping foot in the bush!!!!).....enjoy! pea

jamesw
I was always told that Eagle supporters are the ones who drink Latte while dockers supporters drink beer! As for the Glory, I much rather follow my local state league team
Bibbs
Dockers for me. But that's because I supported East Freo as a kid. Depends on your mind set. Eagles supporters think they should win everything and get upset when they don't, Dockers supporters are always supprised with their team doing well and are waiting for the wheels to fall off. Think of Eagles/Dockers like Arsenal/Tottenham, Liverpool/Everton (but not so much now 'pool are rubbish) or United/City (but not so much now City are minted). And you should really forget about any other sport except cricket, and the occasional international Union game.
Redsquare
Thanks for all the advice and tips. By the looks of things, I should be a Dockers fan. I'll be NOR and hopefully well off (but not rich). I prefer beer to latte. It's always better to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. I also have family ties to dockers, my maternal grandfather was a docker during WW2. I'll check out the films you've all suggested but I'm not watching cricket ( you have to draw a line somewhere!) Greg
Under no circumstances should you support the "Slime" "Weegurls" "Budgies" AKA West Coast eagles, this is tanatmount to making a pact with the devil. Nasy, nasty outfit! Fremantle Dockers are an excellent choice, as are Perth Glory for soccer. Both sound investments, I am happy to decide any onther preferrences for you! CharliePappa
Love thistopic! This is how my family voted for who to barrack for! Wife- West Coast Eagles (because we're moving to Perth and the anchor thing on the Dockers is a bit silly) Me- Adelaide Crows (because we were originally looking at moving to Adelaide, I've been to Adelaide, and one of my cousins supports Port and I like to wind him up) Son-Adeliade Crows (because he knows his dad ALWAYS makes sense) Daughter- Hawthorn Hawks (because one of my cousins turned up unexpectedly at our house in the UK with loads of Hawks stuff) However, my cousins also have a mixed bag of teams who they support: 3 x cousins support Carlton (because of a girly crush on a player from the 80's who moved from Glenelg to the Blues) 1 x cousin support Hawks (because he's from that neck of the woods) 1 x cousin supports Essendon Bombers (because of the other cousin who supports the Hawks) 1 x cousin supports Port Adelaide (because his sisters supported either the Crows or Glenelg/Carton) 1 x cousin support Adelaide Crows (similar to above) As you can tell, Facebook is awash with comments at the weekend, depending how well or how bad your team has done. It's a really simple game to follow, its exciting, can go to the very last few seconds of the game, and the players are some of the best athlete's in sport I have ever seen. Watching soccer (including England) afterwards can seem a bit dull. However, in answer to your question. Just pick a team you a. like the name of b, like the look of a player of c, like a team that someone you know doesnt like or, d, wait and see who wins the flag (either Cats, Swans, Bombers or Hawks probably). Give me a break!
The Eagles for us we love it. Go to every home game but if you want membership go for Dockers as they have to advertise for supporters! Eagles however have a waiting list as long as your arm ! Redsquare
Thought I'd resurrect an old thread.. It appears that my decision to follow the dockers (from the UK) was good luck for Freo! And I'll be down under for the grand final next weekend :-D
